The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292,201,338. Mega Millions: 1 in 290,472,336. Those numbers get quoted everywhere, but almost nobody explains where they come from, what they feel like at human scale, or the more useful question — the odds of winning anything. Here are the real numbers, the math behind them, and the comparisons that make 292 million mean something.
Where the numbers come from
Powerball draws 5 white balls from 69 and 1 red Powerball from 26. The number of possible tickets is the number of ways to choose 5 from 69 — that's 11,238,513 — multiplied by 26 red balls: 11,238,513 × 26 = 292,201,338 equally likely combinations, exactly one of which wins the jackpot.
Mega Millions (since its 2025 overhaul) draws 5 from 70 and a Mega Ball from 24: 12,103,014 × 24 = 290,472,336. The two games are, for jackpot purposes, essentially the same bet.
The odds of winning anything
The number that actually describes a night of playing is the any-prize odds, combining all nine tiers:
- Powerball: about 1 in 24.9 — mostly the $4 Powerball-only prize (1 in 38.3).
- Mega Millions: about 1 in 23 — with its built-in multiplier making the minimum win $10.
- Match 5 (the $1–$2 million tier): about 1 in 11.7 million on Powerball — 25× likelier than the jackpot, and the tier Power Play doubles.

What 1 in 292 million actually feels like
Human intuition fails at eight zeros, so anchor it:
- Filled out, one ticket per second, reading every Powerball combination aloud would take over nine years without sleeping.
- Your lifetime odds of being struck by lightning are commonly estimated around 1 in 15,000–19,000 — thousands of times likelier than a jackpot.
- The odds of dealing yourself a royal flush in five cards: 1 in 649,740 — about 450 royal flushes worth of luck fit inside one jackpot.
- Flipping a fair coin and getting 28 heads in a row is roughly as likely as one Powerball jackpot ticket winning.
And yet someone wins several times a year — because hundreds of millions of tickets are sold per big draw. Do more tickets help? (Yes, linearly — which is to say, barely)
Ten tickets with different numbers are exactly ten times likelier to win than one: 1 in 29.2 million. A hundred tickets: 1 in 2.9 million — now merely five royal flushes of luck. Doubling a nearly-zero chance yields nearly zero; the math never charges you a fee for hope, but it never discounts it either. One more set worth knowing: the odds that a drawn jackpot goes unclaimed to you specifically because of process — unsigned tickets, missed deadlines, unchecked numbers.
