Can You Scan a Lottery Ticket With Your Phone? Checker Apps by State

How does a lottery ticket scanner app work?

Every ticket carries a barcode that identifies it to the lottery's central system. On a draw-game ticket the barcode is printed in the corners; on a scratch-off it sits under the latex, next to the play area, which is why you have to scratch the whole ticket before a scanner can read it. The Pennsylvania Lottery puts it plainly: scan the barcode in the bottom corners of draw and Fast Play tickets, and under the "Scratch to Cash" area on Scratch-Offs.

When you scan, the app sends the ticket's ID to the lottery's system and gets back a winner or non-winner result. It never reads your numbers the way your eye does, so a smudged digit can't fool it. California's Check-A-Ticket shows a pop-up with the prize amount; the Massachusetts app says you will "not only know if you have a winner but how much you hit for". In many states a non-winning scan also enters second-chance drawings, which is the other reason the apps push you to scan everything.

Which state lottery apps have a ticket checker?

The table covers the biggest lottery states. "Scanner" means the official app checks draw-game and scratch tickets by barcode. Details are as of October 2026, from each lottery's app page or app-store listing.

If your state is missing, look for "app" or "ticket checker" on its lottery website. Nearly every lottery app now scans tickets; the few that don't point you to the self-service checker in the store.

Can you scan a Powerball or Mega Millions ticket?

Yes, with your state's app, and only with your state's app. Powerball and Mega Millions are run jointly by the state lotteries, and a ticket belongs to the state that printed it: that state's system holds the barcode and pays the prize. There is no national Powerball app that can read every state's tickets. The apps called "Powerball Scanner" or "Lottery Ticket Scanner" in the app stores are third-party products that photograph the printed numbers and compare them with published results. Handy as a reminder, but they can misread a digit, and they are not a check against the lottery's record of your ticket.

Can you scan a scratch-off ticket?

Yes, and scratch-offs are the main reason the scanners exist: reading a dozen play symbols under the latex is where most mistakes happen. Scratch every covered area first, including the barcode box, then scan. California notes that the Scratchers barcode sits in a different place on each game, so look for it rather than assuming a corner. The scan won't tell you how many top prizes are left in that game; that is on the lottery's website, and how scratch-off tickets work explains where to look.

Does scanning a winning ticket claim the prize?

Usually not. The scan tells you what you have won; the claim is a separate step. Small prizes are paid at retailers up to each state's limit, often $599 or $600; larger ones go to a claim center, by mail, or through a mobile claim where the state offers one.

Texas is the clearest example of a true in-app claim. Scan a ticket worth $600 to $5,000 and the app offers Mobile Claims: you log in or register, give your legal name, address and Social Security number, and the prize is paid to a Zelle account (claims sent between 10 pm and 2 am are delayed). Massachusetts does something similar through a player account, with the money arriving by bank deposit, minus state tax, usually within a couple of weeks. Everywhere else, the scan is the moment you find out, and how to claim a lottery prize covers what comes next. Sign the back of a winning ticket before it leaves your hand, scanner or no scanner.

Is it safe to scan tickets with a third-party app?

Be careful. The official apps are free, run by the state, and need nothing beyond the camera (plus a login for second-chance entries or in-app claims). Unofficial scanner apps vary: some are harmless number-matchers, others want your contacts, your location and a subscription, and a few are fronts for the "you've won, pay the fee" scam described in AI lottery scams. No real lottery asks for a payment to release a prize, and nobody but the lottery can confirm a win.

If you buy through a courier such as Jackpocket or Jackpot.com, the courier holds the physical ticket and shows you its scan in its own app; see how the courier apps compare. Checking results by number, with no app at all, is covered in how to check US lottery results.

What if the app can't read the ticket?

A torn or creased barcode often defeats a phone camera. A retailer's terminal reads damaged barcodes more reliably, and the lottery's claim center can look a ticket up by its serial number as a last resort. A multi-draw ticket that still has drawings to come will show as active rather than as a winner or loser, so check the dates printed on it before you throw it away.

Lottery ticket scanner FAQ

Can you scan a lottery ticket with your phone?

Yes. Most state lotteries' official apps have a ticket checker: point the camera at the ticket's barcode and the app says whether it won and, in most states, the amount. California, Texas, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Georgia, Illinois, Ohio, North Carolina, Michigan and Massachusetts all offer it.

Is there an official Powerball ticket scanner app?

No. Powerball and Mega Millions tickets are checked with the app of the state that sold them, because that state's system holds the ticket's barcode and pays the prize. Apps named "Powerball Scanner" in the app stores are third-party products.

Can you claim a prize by scanning it in the app?

Only in some states. Texas lets you claim prizes of $600 to $5,000 through Mobile Claims in its app, paid by Zelle, and Massachusetts pays eligible in-app claims to your bank. Elsewhere the scan is a check and the claim is a separate step at a retailer, claim center or by mail.

Where is the barcode on a scratch-off ticket?

Under the latex, next to the play area, in a spot that varies by game. Scratch the whole ticket, including the barcode box, before scanning. On draw-game tickets the barcode is printed in the bottom corners.
