Nebraska withholds 3.5% in state income tax (the 2026 rate) from prizes over $5,000. The federal government withholds 24% from prizes over $5,000. Withholding is only a prepayment: what you owe depends on your total income for the year, and most of a jackpot-sized prize is taxed at the top federal rate of 37%, so expect to owe more when you file. A tax professional can help you plan before you claim a large prize.
