How the Mega Millions jackpot works
Mega Millions draws are held Tuesday and Friday nights at 11:00 PM ET. Players pick 5 numbers from 1–70 plus a Mega Ball from 1–24; tickets cost $5 per play (multiplier included). When no ticket matches every number, the jackpot rolls over and grows with ticket sales — the runs you see climbing in the chart above.
The advertised figure is the annuity value: 30 graduated payments over 29 years. The cash option is the actual prize pool — typically 45–55% of the annuity number — taken as one lump sum. Nearly all jackpot winners take the cash. After a win, the jackpot resets to $50 million and the cycle starts again.
The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 290,472,336 per play, no matter how large the jackpot gets — big jackpots are won more often only because far more tickets are sold, covering more of the possible combinations.
